The next round of solar light installations in Remexio will take place in early to mid October 2011. We hope to install lighting units in 300 homes in the villages of Fatu Rasa (117 units), Suku Liurai (73 units) and Tula Takeu (110 units). These vilages are accessible only by very rough roads and in the case of Suku Liurai, by foot! This will bring to well over 800 the number of houses with solar lighting in the Remexio subdistrict. Three members of KVRP will accompany Alternative Technologies Association (ATA) staff working with and training local Timorese to do most of the installations and to establish management committees for the ongoing maintenance. The exciting aspect of this next round is that ATA has developed an upgraded unit with double the battery capacity and solar panel size enabling up to 7 hours of light following a sunny day. ATA also aims to retrofit the 520 homes with existing solar units with this upgraded unit.
